Three months after their thrilling showdown for the UAAP cage championship, La Salle and Ateneo go at it again, this time, for golf supremacy when the fifth La Salle-Ateneo Match Play is held on December 18-21, 2008 at the Tagaytay Midlands in Tagaytay City.
The Lasallian parbusters have ruled the last three staging of the annual Ryder Cup-style event, including last year’s masterful 24-18 victory, also at Tagaytay Midlands, in a match they dominated from the start behind the hot-starting crew of its youth brigade.
The Lasallian golfers are expected to field in practically the same roster with some additions to further boost their already formidable line-up as they gun for a fourth straight championship and a sort of revenge after Ateneo swept La Salle in the UAAP basketball finals last September.
But the Eagles, who won the inaugural staging of the event at Sherwood, will surely go flat out to spring a surprise in a bid to cut the Archers’ lead in the duel, organized and hosted by Belle Corporation Corp. and Tagaytay Highlands in cooperation with the La Salle Golf Club and the Ateneo Golf Foundation.
The skippers of both squad have actually kept their respective rosters under wraps but based on last year’s line-ups, La Salle is tipped to lean on the likes of top scorer Miko Alejandro, Justin Limjap, SEA Games silver medalist, reigning back-to-back national champion Anya Tanpinco and Kim Hong with Tommy Manotoc to provide experience and leadership.
Ateneo, on the other hand, will pin its hopes on the US-based Marcel Puyat, many-time seniors champion Iggy Clavecilla, veteran campaigners Jeric Hechanova, Mari Hechanova and former national champion Anthony Fernando.
The upcoming match play, however, is not all about rivalry and competition as it also aims to promote camaraderie among the alumni of both universities.
Belle Corporation Corp., one of the country’s leading leisure property development companies, and Tagaytay Highlands have gained the rights to stage to the annual for the next three five years with Willy Ocier , founder of Tagaytay Highlands and vice chair of Belle Corporation Corp. confident of another successful staging of the high-profile duel.
The event will feature the foursome and four-ball matches in the first two days with all 18 players of both sides clashing in head-to-head duels in the final day.
